Second Life

Apr. 15th, 2009 | 08:58 pm

Ok so I spent an hour wandering around second life.  I began with the clothes that you start with and by the end I had made a complete transformation.  Mar and I started out wandering together and tried to join this place called MCM where they battle it out in mech warriors.  We couldn't get it to work because every time we jumped into the arena we just had giant cards wrapped around us. So we stayed there for a while and then I went in search of some new clothes.  Not having any money can be a problem so I entered the search "free clothes" and found this place called Gnubie.  It was a pretty cool place because it had alot of items for only 1L and some other items for free.  I ended up leaving with a big, orange triceratops costume and a Duke Nukem outfit.  Being a huge Duke Nukem fan I naturally chose to wear that.  Second on the list, because I was Duke Nukem, was to find a gun.  Once again for free because I still have no money.  I entered a search for "free gun" and after a few teleports had obtained two free uzi's. Awesome! I then found this place that would let you pilot a helicopter for free.  With great enthusiasm I took off in a shiny black chopper.  I really couldn't control it and found myself climbing higher and higher.  I couldn't stop its death spiral to the moon.  At Mar's suggestion, I pressed the stand up button and immediately fell from the craft.  Now I'm free falling back down to the ground which looks blue because I too high for anything to load.  i fall through some clouds and about 5 seconds later I impact the ground face first...Ouch. In true Nukem style I simply brush myself off.  I figured I had had enough excitement for one Second Life day. Thus it ends.

Ohh but before I left, I teleported to Luskwood to scare the furry creatures there.  They didn't seem to be intimidated by my macho outfit.  Oh well.

2 Level Site

Apr. 8th, 2009 | 10:39 pm

I sat for a while trying to think of a good site that had two levels of links. I tried to think of sites that I had seen that could serve as a good example and then i thought of a company that could hold some promise.  My first search came up with a winner.  Shiner.com!!  Its pretty sweet because when you click on the "whats on tap" link it takes you to a screen that has all the shiner beers in the form of beer tap handles.  When you click on a tap a glass appears and is filled with beer before your eyes.  It then shows a paragraph about the beer.  How sweet is that!

Here's the link:

Best and Worst Web Designs

Mar. 23rd, 2009 | 03:50 pm

Examples of the Worst Designs:

http://www.restaurantguideatlanta.com/

http://www.exmormon.org/

A website with a good design can be characterized by an organized format, good readability, and a conciseness that still offers the necessary information. Contrary to these necessities, the two websites linked above provide stereotypical bad web designs. Both sites have an overall layout that lacks a clear direction for the user. There is too much information displayed around the page without an organized format. The user is so bombarded by scattered links and different color boxes and text that a clear cohesion seems to be lacking. There are no tabs that group the information. Instead there is a mass of information that is thrown onto the front page. In other words, there lacks concise organization and format for the sites.

Another major problem that results from the disorder of these sites is the low readability of the text. The combination of the colorful backgrounds and the white text makes the pages difficult to read. In addition the restaurant guide site has animated objects that distract and add to the complexity. This low readability factor and the immense amount of immediate information greatly takes away from the effectiveness of these sites. The same amount of information can be presented with a better layout. Tabs and a better grouping of the information onto other pages could greatly improve these sites.

Example of the Best Design:

http://www.moose.as/

The site linked above provides an example of an effective site that meets the previously mentioned criteria with an organized format, good readability, and the subsequent presentation of concise information. Unlike the other two sites, Moose’s site has a format that is easy to follow. The site does not flood the user with a mass of links or information. It rather provides large tabs to cycle the examples of their previous work instead of listing the images down the page. Large titles give the user clear paths to take around the site. There is not a lot of extraneous information to distract the user from the important information. The sites minimalism is its strength. An organized layout like this shows a higher level of professionalism and this is a good thing since they are a web design company.

The presentation of the site gives an overall crisp appearance. The black background provides an interesting element while not over powering the look of the site. The white and grey lettering pops out of the page without overwhelming the eyes. If anything the grey lettering could be brighter. Again, the minimalism of the site provides a clean façade while making use of an interesting texture. For the most part, Moose’s site avoids common mistakes of bad web design and has produced an effective site for its users.

How to prepare for 2029

Feb. 18th, 2009 | 11:30 pm

When I turn 40 years old in 2029, I think Im going to be an unhappy man.  Our world, or rather our spherical rock encased in a shell of solar panels, factories, and highways, will be completely different from the naive, traditional view for my middle years.  Perhaps what I consider to be my middle years, around 40, will instead be considered young in the future, medically advanced society.  The readings offer views of advanced technology that will envelop our bodies and our minds.  We will all become slaves to the minority elite technicians because the masses will have every need taken care of by technology and will therein have no desire to learn how everything works.  The control and power will gradually be handed over to the already information hording nerds.  Our minds will be dulled by the lack of real purpose or goals and our bodies will be filled with healing nanobots. They will be constantly repairing our intrails in order to keep us alive as pieces of the social and economic cog.  This technological enslavement seems to outweigh the benefits of seeing a futuristic flying car or even a lightsaber =). Ok I take that back.

So how then do we prepare for 2029?  I dont believe that there will be any stopping the advancement of technology in our society.  I will just have to face the fact that by the time I am 40 there will be little to no natural world left, and possibly even more discouraging is that I doubt anyone will care to save whats left.  Arguing about govt regulations on genetic altering restrictions will become more important than maintaining the forests.  I believe that we all have an obligation to try and understand computers, the web, genetic science, robotics and any other technology that hasnt even been thought of yet but will surely invade our lives.  We cannot allow the control of our planet to fall to the minority controlled by the large companies.  We as educated individuals will stand a better chance at voicing our concerns and having those opinions successfully understood.  Knowledge rules, and it will be essential in tomorrows world.

Maybe I should just go become a hermit or a mountain man while I still can.

Website Topic

Feb. 3rd, 2009 | 07:21 am

The main topic for my webpage will be concerning nanotechnology as it applies to its future medical uses. The future of nanotechnology in the medical field really interested me after we looked at the broader nanotechnology future in class. It’s an area of study and theory that has some great promise for our society.

The four subtopics are all possible uses of nanotechnology in medicine.

1)      Snapshots of systems- Nanobots working together could produce a mutli-dimensional molecular model of human tissue

2)      Artificial mitochondria- Nanobots could help produce or distribute ATP to help lost or damages tissue

3)      Provide Oxygen- Nanobots could carry compressed oxygen around the body and release it to help tissue cut off from oxygen

4)      Killing cancer cells- Nanobots could carry nano-computers, binding sites, and poison to locate cancerous tissue and destroy it

All of these functions could one day save millions of lives and so I think they would provide for an interesting website. Wish me luck!

Future Robotics and Ethical Concerns

Jan. 22nd, 2009 | 07:56 am

Robotics is beginning to emerge in many aspects of our modern society.  Its ability to go where no man feels safe, conduct tasks flawlessly, and seemingly do the impossible, has and will make robotics a necessary and important part of our lives.  Despite robotics value to society, its major functions in transportation and jobs create ethical issues for humans.

We are always fascinated with the latest and greatest "toys" out on the market.  We are amazed at the balance and usablility of the segway.  Everyone wants to own one and scoot around town.  As I get older I find these devices entering our lives more and more and in turn I see ourselfs becoming lazier and more dependent on technology.  Robotics like the segway will no doubt make out our lives easier but I wonder at what cost to our independence and health.  Robotics other major function today and tomorrow is its use in factories and other job areas.  Machines like the robotics arms that weld and paint the cars on the assembly lines all around the world, take jobs that could be given to humans.  The robotics accuracy, and speed make it a must have for a competitive car company in the global economy.  I simply wonder how far this trend will go.  Will we one day wake up and be surrounded by machines beckoning to our every will?  Will we simply become obsolete or is there a happy medium?

I can imagine a great future with the careful hand of the robotic surgeon saving the lives of the sick and dying.  Perhaps a cleaner environment is possible with the help of more efficient machines to aid our struggle.  Only time will tell where we take our society but one thing is for certain.  Robotics has entered our lives and will most likely refuse to power down.

Hello

Jan. 15th, 2009 | 09:26 am
mood: chipper chipper

Hi everyone, Ill guess Ill tell a little about myself to start off with.  i'm a junior from Midland Texas, a god ol West Texas guy.  I played football at TU for 2 years and still like to lift weights and run to stay in shape.  I am a communications major and would hopefully like to have a career that involves writing and creative thinking.  I havent really narrowed it down farther than that.  I also have contemplated joining the military to become a pilot.  We shall see.

I like to think of myself as a pretty mellow guy.  I like 90's rock, jazz, and really anything that is easy listening.  As for movies, my favs are Shawshank Redemption, Platoon, Star Wars and many others.  I love to watch cash cab and the price is right.  Fishing is my passion and I love being outdoors.

I hope to gain more experience in using computers/web from this class, to help out in the advanced world of today and tomorrow.  Irish_iron is a D-baeeg who like the food libraries, libraaaries, libreeeries...
